New to Dog Sports? Start with FastCAT!

Whether you’re brand new to dog sports or just curious about FastCAT, you’re in the right place! FastCAT is one of the most beginner-friendly dog sports out there, it’s fun, low-pressure, and easy to try. Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

 FastCAT (Coursing Ability Test) is a 100-yard dash just for dogs! Each dog runs one at a time, chasing a lure (usually a fluffy white plastic bag) down a fenced-in straightaway. It’s a timed event, and dogs of all shapes, sizes, and speeds are welcome.

FastCAT is a fun way to:

  • Bond with your dog

  • Get them moving in a safe, structured activity

  • Earn official AKC titles and ribbons!

Yes! Your dog can run if:

  • They are at least 12 months old

  • They are in good physical condition

  • They are registered with the AKC/approved agencies.

Mixed-breed dogs can participate by registering through the AKC Canine Partners Program.

To enter a FastCAT trial, your dog must be registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC). If your dog is a mixed breed or a non-AKC breed, you can still participate by registering through the AKC Canine Partners program.

Registration is quick and easy, and once completed, you’ll receive an AKC number that you can use to enter FastCAT and other AKC performance events.

How Can I Enter?

You can enter a FastCAT trial by submitting your entry in one of three ways:

  • Online via the website

  • By emailing the trial secretary your completed entry form

  • By mailing a paper entry form with a check

When can I enter?

You may only enter after the trial officially opens and before it closes. These dates are listed in the premium. Most trials open 3–5 weeks in advance and close about a week before the event.

If you submit your entry or payment early, it may not be accepted. Make sure you check the premium or our calendar to confirm the correct dates.

Never done FastCAT before? Try it risk-free!

Come to our Fun Run Practice the day before the trial. It’s $5 for members / $10 for non-members and the perfect way to get your dog familiar with the setup. No pressure, just fun!
