green bulletAgility

Agility is a fun, fast-paced sport where dog and handler must work as a team to successfully maneuver through an obstacle course. In order for a team to be successful, the handler must learn to use body language to communicate with the dog, while, at the same time, the dog must learn to read the handler's body language.

TVKC has developed four levels of classes (Fundamentals, Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced) to help both dog and handler gain the skills needed in order to become a successful agility team.

The Fundamentals Class is designed to provide the dog and handler team with a solid foundation of the basic jumping and handling skills and familiarize the dog with the contact obstacles. The team is introduced to several new skills each week that build on what was learned the previous week. After practicing these skills during the week, the instructors help troubleshoot any problems that occurred.

The Novice Class builds on the basic skills learned in the Fundamentals Class. More emphasis is placed on gaining proficiency with the contacts and weave poles, as well as introducing more complex handling skills.

The Intermediate Handling class utilizes all of the skills the team has learned in the Fundamentals and Novice classes and starts to apply them in patterns similar to a trial situation.

The Advanced Handling class fine-tunes the skills learned in the previous three classes. Handlers are encouraged to "push" themselves outside of their comfort zones and explore the different ways of handling as they run a course.

By the time the dog and handler team has completed all four levels they should feel comfortable enough with the skills they've learned to join a training group. Training groups not only help team members continue learning, they also build friendships with people who have similar interests.

TVKC has developed four level of classes (all 8 week sessions) which start in September and continue in February as well as offering training sessions for those who have completed all levels and are competing in agility trials.

green bulletAgility Classes

Tanana Kennel Club agility classes start September 18, 2017 at Camp Li-Wa as follows:

Evaluation Dates:

Dog and handler teams are evaluated in the fall prior to the start of classes in order to determine which class level is appropriate for them. Dogs from other training facilities are welcome to test into any class level as long as they meet the minimum TVKC requirements for that level.

If you are interested in being evaluated for a TVKC Agility class and/or if you'd like to know what skills are evaluated at each level, please email Candace O'Connor

Fundamental and Novice

In agility classes several dogs are working off leash at one time. Therefore, potential Fundamental students are evaluated not only on their basic obedience skills, but on how the dog acts around other dogs and handlers, and how well the dog and handler work together as a team. Novice students are evaluated on the basic agility skills taught in the TVKC Fundamentals Class.

For more information, email Candace O'Connor

Intermediate and Advanced Handling

Intermediate and Advanced classes will be evaluated at a run-thru. To schedule date/time email Candace O'Connor
